Assemblyman Stirpe: Donate Blood at the 9th Annual Lifesavers Blood Drive

Growing up, my father sponsored an annual blood drive in the village of Clyde, a tradition he kept for 25 years. Seeing his work on behalf of the community instilled an appreciation of the importance of blood donation and inspired me to follow in his footsteps. When my father needed a transfusion during open heart surgery, I saw firsthand how blood donations can go a long way in helping to save lives. On Tuesday, July 21, I’ll be hosting my annual Lifesavers Blood Drive in his honor to raise awareness and help prevent blood shortages this summer.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. A single donation can save as many as three lives. Yet, while an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10 percent actually do each year. Platelets – which are critical for cancer patients – have a shelf life of only five days, making timely donations vital. Blood cannot be manufactured and has no substitute, so the Red Cross and people in our community depend on the generosity of blood donors to meet our blood supply needs.

In addition to boosting summer blood supply, these blood drives provide an opportunity for friends, neighbors and businesses in our community to come together in support of a good cause. This year’s event will feature dozens of prizes, great food and live music performed by talented local artists. Throughout the past nine years, the annual Lifesavers Blood Drive has helped to collect hundreds of pints of blood for the Red Cross. And with your help, we could reach a milestone of 1,000 pints of blood this year.

While blood donation is a safe and simple process, it is important to know your eligibility. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. All donors will also be asked to answer a short questionnaire to ensure all health requirements are met.

I hope you’ll consider joining me in helping to save lives this summer at the 9th annual Lifesavers Blood Drive. The event will be held from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, at Driver’s Village at 5885 E. Circle Drive in Cicero.
