Assemblyman Stirpe: Join the Effort to Revitalize Central New York

The hunt is on for the biggest and brightest ideas to revitalize central New York’s economy. The deadline for the public to submit ideas that could help our region secure vital economic development funding is fast approaching, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to get involved in the future of our community.

Earlier this year, the governor announced a $1.5 billion program – the Upstate Revitalization Initiative (URI) – to systematically transform the economy and bring jobs back to upstate by making strategic investments in a variety of projects. Seven upstate regions, including Central New York, are competing for a share of the initiative’s funding. The three regions with the best plans for revitalization will receive $500 million each over five years.

The Central New York Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) is managing Central New York’s application for the initiative. Throughout the past several months, the council has been busy researching and prioritizing projects to help jumpstart our local economy and create new job opportunities for our area. As part of the application process, the council launched the Big Idea Competition to encourage public input and maintain transparency throughout the process. Residents have until Aug. 7 to submit their ideas on how to revitalize our region. To submit an online application, visit regionalcouncils.ny.gov/content/central-new-york.

When it comes to attracting state dollars to the region, the Central New York REDC has an impressive track record. The council has obtained the most state funding of any of the other regional councils to the tune of $344 million for over 300 projects. So submit your best big idea, as this is a chance to truly make a difference. This competition places the future of the upstate economy in the hands of those who know their communities best.

I also encourage residents to attend the REDC’s strategy summit on Wednesday, July 22 from 1-4 p.m. at the Oncenter in Syracuse. This event gives community members the chance to share their ideas and receive expert advice on the final application, as well as get a glimpse into the process. Please visit regionalcouncils.ny.gov/content/cnyredc-july-22-2015 to register.

This is a unique opportunity for us to improve our communities through collaborative efforts. Your idea could be the one to set the stage for the next economic driver of the upstate economy. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about this or any other community issue, please don’t hesitate to contact me at StirpeA@assembly.state.ny.us or by calling 452-1115.
