Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (R,I,C,WF-Sag Harbor) today announced that his district office will be accepting donations for the annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve “Toys for Tots” program. This will be the sixth year that Thiele’s office has sponsored the event.
Thiele’s office will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for children from Monday, December 1, 2008 through Thursday, December 18, 2008. Donations may be dropped off to Thiele’s office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 2302 Main Street in Bridgehampton. Assemblyman Thiele is also sponsoring a box at the Center Moriches Library at 235 Main Street in Center Moriches so donations can be dropped off there as well.
“I am so proud to be a part of such a fine organization that helps make the holidays special for children who are less fortunate,” said Thiele. “I encourage residents to take part in the Toys for Tots program and drop off a new, unwrapped toy to my office. If everyone does their part we can make this holiday season a magical one for children all over Long Island,” concluded Thiele.
The Toys for Tots charity was established in 1947 by the Marines’ Los Angeles Reserve Unit to collect and distribute toys to less fortunate children whose parents were unable to provide presents for them. The Marine Corps Reserve adopted the program and began collecting toys in nearly 200 communities nationwide. Today, the Marines distribute an average of 12.6 million toys to over 5 million children annually.
