Thiele Announces Third Phase of Montauk Highway Resurfacing Project

New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF-Sag Harbor) today announced that a third phase has been added to the long-awaiting Montauk Highway resurfacing project. The third phase, costing approximately $24 million, will resurface Montauk Highway between Egypt Lane in East Hampton Village and Etna Avenue in Montauk.

The first phase, completed in the Spring of 2013, resurfaced a 2.3 mile stretch of the highway in East Hampton from Stephen Hands Path to Route 114. That project cost $1.53 million.

The second phase, to resurface a 10 mile stretch of Montauk Highway from CR 39 to Stephen Hands Path was announced earlier this year. At the urging of the Assemblyman and ten other elected officials representing the area, the New York State Department of Transportation agreed to undertake this $12.53 million project sometime after Labor Day.

Thiele concluded, “The importance of this highway cannot be underestimated. It is the only major road bringing people to and from the South Fork of Long Island. There is no alternative route. It is the most highly trafficked road on eastern Long Island. Its condition is important to local residents, the second home industry, business and commerce, and local fire, ambulance, and emergency service workers. I have been fighting very hard for this day to come. I can finally say that the entire stretch from Southampton to Montauk will be repaved.”
