Rozic Congratulates President-elect of Taiwan Dr. Tsai Ing-wen on Historic Victory

Letter recognizes Dr. Tsai as first woman President-elect

Flushing, NY – Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D,WF-Fresh Meadows) sent a congratulatory letter yesterday to President-elect Tsai Ing-wen on the occasion of her victory as the first woman elected President of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Dr. Tsai, who currently serves as Chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won the January 16th election by a landslide obtaining 56% of the vote.

Rozic is joined on the letter by members of the State Assembly’s Legislative Women’s Caucus in recognizing Ms. Tsai’s leadership and the DPP’s win in the Legislative Yuan, where the party secured 68 of the 113 seats that were up for election.

Last October, Rozic met with members of the DPP and the Director General at the Republic of China’s (ROC) Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss ways to build on the relationship between the State of New York and Taiwan.

The full letter can be read below.

Dear President-elect Tsai Ing-wen:

It is our great honor to extend our best wishes to you and Mr. Chen on your election as President and Vice President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on January 16, 2016. Allow us to express our heartfelt congratulations on this historic occasion and your achievement in becoming the first female President-elect.

Thanks to your leadership, women in Taiwan have much to celebrate. As you know, approximately a third of the 113 lawmakers elected to the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan’s parliament, in the last polls were women--a percentage that we aspire to in the United States. We also congratulate the people of Taiwan for once again demonstrating the strength of their robust, engaging democratic system.

We wish you much success and look forward to a continued friendship between the State of New York and the Republic of China.
