Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay On Correctional Facility Assaults

“The recent string of violent assaults taking place in New York’s correctional facilities represents an unacceptable threat to the men and women who work there and to the overall health of our criminal justice system. The fact that Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Acting Commissioner Anthony Annucci saw fit to take drastic, public action is evidence the problem has reached a critical juncture.

State corrections officers already face enormous challenges each day they show up to work. We must ensure they are not subjected to any additional hardship at the hands of those incarcerated in the facilities under their care. Sadly, policies being promulgated by the Majority Conferences in the Legislature have done more harm than good with respect to keeping our communities, our law enforcement officers and our corrections personnel safe. The Assembly Minority Conference has always stood by the men and women tasked with ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all parties within the walls of our state’s correctional facilities, and we will continue to do so through this challenging period.”
