New York state is home to hundreds of exceptional parks and boasts some of the best outdoor and recreational spaces in the nation. During July, Parks and Recreation Month, I urge our state’s visitors and residents to consider utilizing these incredible locations and recognize the hard work and dedication necessary to bring these magnificent spaces to life.

This year, the National Recreation and Park Association is calling special attention to the individuals who have worked to create “vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation.” These parks, and those who support them, play a vital role in providing opportunities for health and wellness, tourism, economic activity and environmental sustainability. I join them in thanking the hard-working professionals who create and maintain these important spaces.

Whether you’re going camping, boating, hiking, swimming or taking part in team sports, these are just handful of ways to enjoy the outdoors. For those interested in utilizing state campgrounds, take a peek at these helpful resources along with the New York State Camping Guide linked here. Be sure to look over important information regarding campfire guidelines and other safety tips as well.

For those in the central New York area, one of my favorite locations is Selkirk Shores State Park, which offers views of some of the most magnificent sunsets in the state, located along Lake Ontario. The greenery, the aquatic vistas and the camping are among some of the best our state has to offer.

While camping, it is especially critical to protect yourself and your party from Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses, too. The New York State Department of Health notes ticks usually live in damp areas near ground level. Be especially vigilant in tall grass, brush and near the edge of woodland areas. The department also recommends checking all campers, including pets, thoroughly at the end of each day to ensure everyone is tick free.

Additionally, for those inclined to hit the open water, New York also offers boating safety courses with vital information to ensure everyone has a fun and safe time.

The summertime offers so many great opportunities for outdoor family fun. I hope each of you finds time to enjoy New York’s many great parks and get some fresh air – thepossibilities are endless.
