“Eighteen years have passed, but the memories of September 11, 2001 remain vivid today, as our entire state and nation offer somber reflection on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America.

The events of that day will always be part of our national consciousness. Those of us who are old enough to remember likely recall exactly where we were when the attacks began, or when we saw the shocking images of the World Trade Center burning and collapsing. Nearly 3,000 were killed that day, another 6,000 were injured and still countless others were impacted in some way – many feeling those effects even today.

Collectively, we mourn the tragic loss of friends, loved ones and fellow Americans. But we must also recognize the extraordinary valor of the men and women who gave their lives to help save others, and honor the resilience of a country that suffered one of its darkest moments but recovered and rose even stronger.

The first responders, emergency personnel, law enforcement and U.S. military demonstrated unimaginable bravery and commitment in the face of horrific tragedy. Some made the ultimate sacrifice and our country owes them a debt that can never be repaid.

Eighteen years ago, a cowardly, evil enemy challenged our American values, resolve and greatness. Today, we remain the greatest country the world has ever known, and we continue to be a beacon of hope and freedom.

We will forever cherish and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, but their legacy lives on in a proud nation, whose spirit and strength will never be broken.”
