AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring adequate
training in the use of automated external defibrillators (AED) and
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for new certification as a school
teacher
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 3001-e
2 to read as follows:
3 § 3001-e. School employees; training in the use of AED and CPR.
4 Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the commissioner shall
5 prescribe regulations requiring that all persons applying, on or after
6 July first, two thousand fifteen, to work at a school in any non-teach-
7 ing position shall, in addition to all other requirements, have
8 completed adequate training in the use of automated external defibrilla-
9 tors (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The training shall
10 be obtained from an institution or provider which has been approved by
11 the department to provide such training. Each applicant shall provide
12 the department with documentation showing that he or she has completed
13 the required training.
14 § 2. Section 3004 of the education law is amended by adding a new
15 subdivision 7 to read as follows:
16 7. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the commissioner shall
17 prescribe regulations requiring that all persons applying, on or after
18 July first, two thousand fifteen, for a certificate or license to be a
19 teacher shall, in addition to all the other certification or licensure
20 requirements, have completed adequate training in the use of automated
21 external defibrillators (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
22 The training shall be obtained from an institution or provider which has
23 been approved by the department to provide such training. Each appli-
24 cant shall provide the department with documentation showing that he or
25 she has completed the required training.
26 § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
