5 lyrics to the song are as follows:
6 Verse 1: I've got an old mule and her name is Sal
7 Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
8 She's a good old worker and a good old pal
9 Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
10 We've hauled some barges in our day
11 Filled with lumber, coal, and hay
12 And every inch of the way we know
    13 From Albany to Buffalo
    14 Chorus:
15 Low bridge, every body down

16 Low bridge for we're coming to a town
17 And you'll always know your neighbor
18 And you'll always know your pal
19 If you've ever navigated on the Erie Canal
20 Verse 2: We'd better look around for a job, old gal
21 Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
22 'Cause you bet your life I'd never part with Sal
23 Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
24 Git up there mule, here comes a lock
    25 We'll make Rome 'bout six o'clock

2 Right back home to Buffalo
     3 Repeat Chorus
4 Verse 3: Oh, where would I be if I lost my pal?
5 Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
6 Oh, I'd like to see a mule as good as Sal
7 Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
8 A friend of mine once got her sore
     9 Now he's got a busted jaw
10 Cause she let fly with her iron toe
11 And kicked him back to Buffalo
    12 Repeat Chorus
13 Verse 4: Don't have to call when I want my Sal
14 Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
15 She trots from her stall like a good old gal
16 Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
17 I eat my meals with Sal each day

18 I eat beef and she eats hay
19 And she ain't so slow if you want to know
20 She put the "Buff" in Buffalo
