Provides for the preservation of a claimant's eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits while the claimant is studying to become a certified teacher or a registered professional nurse in a training program that does not take more than 48 months to complete.

AN ACT to amend the labor law, in relation to the preservation of eligi-
bility for unemployment insurance benefits for persons participating
in training programs leading to becoming a registered professional
nurse or certified teacher
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Paragraph (c) of subdivision 1 of section 599 of the labor
2 law, as amended by chapter 593 of the laws of 1991, is amended to read
3 as follows:
4 (c) the training is offered by a competent and reliable agency and (1)
5 does not require more than twenty-four months to complete; or (2) is
6 designed to educate the claimant to become a registered professional
7 nurse pursuant to article one hundred thirty-nine of the education law
8 or a certified teacher pursuant to article sixty-one of the education
9 law and does not require more than forty-eight months to complete; and
10 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall apply to indi-
11 viduals approved for training on or after the effective date of this
12 act.
