        AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to mandating  instruction
          in secondary schools regarding domestic violence
 

          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section  812-a
     2  to read as follows:
     3    § 812-a. Instruction for primary and secondary school students regard-
     4  ing  child abuse and domestic violence. The commissioner, in cooperation
     5  with the board of regents, is authorized and directed to  establish  and
     6  develop programs in primary and secondary schools of instruction regard-
     7  ing  child  abuse and domestic violence. Such instruction shall include,
     8  but not be limited to, a recognition of the signs and effects of  domes-
     9  tic  violence,  and awareness of the potential for an individual to be a
    10  possible batterer, abuser or victim.

    11    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
