COMMEMORATING the 75th Anniversary of Le Moyne
College
WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled;
its history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its
educational professionals and the students they inspire; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in higher education for the young adults of this
noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New
York, and to recognize its commitment to helping generations of students
in their pursuit of academic excellence and empowering them through
their education to make a difference in their communities; and
WHEREAS, Le Moyne College is a highly-respected institution of
higher education in Syracuse, New York; and
WHEREAS, Named after the 17th century Jesuit and emissary of the
French government in Montreal to the Haudenosaunee, Le Moyne College was
founded by the Society of Jesus in 1946, and honors the Onondaga Nation,
the indigenous people on whose land the College stands; and
WHEREAS, From its humble beginnings as the first Jesuit
coeducational undergraduate institution, to becoming the first Jesuit
college to have a female laywoman president, Le Moyne College embodies
its teachings of social justice, academic excellence, and commitment to
improving the lives of those in our community; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its distinguished 75-year history, Le Moyne
College has become nationally recognized as one of America's best
liberal arts colleges, securing its reputation for providing a rigorous
education in the Jesuit tradition; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, Le Moyne College has grown from
offering classes in downtown Syracuse at 254 East Onondaga Street, to
hosting classes on its 150-acre campus, which is home to 29 buildings;
and
WHEREAS, Today, under the visionary guidance of its President, Linda
LeMura, the College enrolls approximately 2,500 full-time undergraduate
students and more than 500 graduate students, and employs over 600
faculty and staff; and
WHEREAS, Le Moyne College alumni remain a testament to the
institution's emphasis on education of the whole person and the search
for meaning and value as integral parts of the intellectual life,
pursuing and excelling in careers such as business, politics,
communications, law, health care, and education; and
WHEREAS, For more than three-quarters of a century, Le Moyne College
has demonstrated its commitment to the Jesuit ideal of service to one's
community through its engagement with the City of Syracuse and by
empowering its students to become "men and women for and with others";
and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, Le Moyne
College may look back with pride upon its humble beginnings, find just
satisfaction in its purposeful growth and hold true of purpose in its
dedication to serving the educational needs of its students; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Le Moyne College, noting the
propriety of its goals, the constancy of its commitment and the
significance of its accomplishments; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Linda LeMura, President of Le Moyne College.
