BY: Senator GRIFFO

COMMEMORATING the 80th Anniversary of the Potsdam
        Public Museum

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality
of life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by
its exceptional cultural, educational and recreational institutions; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Potsdam Public Museum; and

WHEREAS, The Potsdam Public Museum is a non-profit educational
institution which strives to collect, preserve, study and exhibit
artifacts and materials relating to the history of Potsdam, New York,
and the surrounding area; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1940, the Potsdam Public Museum is a department
of the Village of Potsdam, with policy governed by an independent board
of trustees; its extensive collections span the history of the Village
and include 18th-20th Century decorative arts collected by area
residents; and

WHEREAS, The building housing the Potsdam Public Museum was built in
1876, as the First Universalist Church; and

WHEREAS, In the early 1930s, the congregation donated the building
to the village to be used as a public library, and it served as the
library from 1940 until 1976; during that time, the museum was moved
from its original location to the basement of the Civic Center; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Potsdam Public Museum houses the exhibit
galleries, archives, educational facilities, work rooms and storage
areas of the Museum; since 1933, the building has been part of the Civic
Center, together with an auditorium and the municipal offices which were
built, using Potsdam sandstone, as a voter-approved bond project; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Potsdam Public Museum is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its dedicated staff and board, whose
involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive
commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the
community it serves; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
institutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Potsdam Public Museum; and be it
further
