CONGRATULATING News Radio 810 and 103.1 WGY upon
the occasion of celebrating its 100th Anniversary
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality
and character of life in this great Empire State is indelibly enriched
by the faithful and untiring efforts of those individuals who have
helped shape the history of broadcasting in their area; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate News Radio 810 and 103.1 WGY upon the occasion of its 100th
Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, This momentous occasion will be celebrated with a myriad of
events throughout the year including a special day of broadcast on
Sunday, February 20, 2022, and various podcasts as part of a series
called "Wireless-100 Years of WGY," featuring the voices of former
staffers or their families to talk about the time they spent on the
radio stations; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, WGY has strived to inspire with the highest
quality educational programming, explore the arts, culture and heritage
of the region and beyond, engage in thoughtful consideration of news and
issues of importance, and entertain with the very best in multimedia
programming; and
WHEREAS, Licensed in Schenectady, New York, WGY strongly values
diversity, in opinion, thought and culture; creativity and innovation,
in thinking, programming, and content development; integrity, in how it
conducts business, in the programming it creates; courage, to be
different, accept failure, to take a stand; transparency, to open the
activities of the station to public inquiry; accountability, in all its
actions; open-mindedness, in how it approaches issues and opinions; and
responsiveness, to community interests, needs and new ideas; these
values help WGY clearly define its mission as an organization serving
its community; and
WHEREAS, WGY has always been a trailblazer and was New York's
original radio station, broadcasting for the first time on February 20,
1922, for one hour and three minutes; and
WHEREAS, In that same year, the first radio drama, "The Wolf" was
performed by the WGY Players and the first remote broadcast was held at
Yale and Harvard Universities; WGY also initiated the first two-way
communication to England; and
WHEREAS, In addition to its informative programming, WGY has served
its community in numerous other capacities, such as raising significant
funds for various children's charities and the children's hospital at
Albany Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, The success of WGY is in direct correlation to the efforts
of its staff, whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized
by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an
uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the
institution and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, WGY has served the Capital Region with
integrity and devotion, continuously striving to meet the needs of its
listeners and viewers through entertainment and enlightenment; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate News Radio 810 and 103.1 WGY upon the occasion of
celebrating its 100th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to News Radio 810 and 103.1 WGY.
