MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
May 2024, as Lower East Side History Month in the
State of New York
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the proud and distinguished histories of the neighborhoods
which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 2024, as Lower East
Side History Month in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Each year in May, Lower East Side cultural and civic
groups, small businesses, and residents create a variety of public
events, exhibits, tours, and learning opportunities to highlight the
unique cultures in different parts of its neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, Lower East Side History Month emphasizes the diversity,
small businesses and artistic achievements of the Lower East Side, a
neighborhood in the southeastern part of the New York City borough of
Manhattan which includes the East Village, Chinatown, Two Bridges and
Loisaida; and
WHEREAS, Conceived and launched by Fourth Arts Block and Downtown
Art, in partnership with various cultural and community groups, Lower
East Side History Month aims to connect its present to its past,
exploring how its history can inform and inspire its future; and
WHEREAS, The Lower East Side has always welcomed immigrants and
helped set them on a path to becoming independent and strong New
Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Lower East Side continues to
provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and
WHEREAS, The residents of the Lower East Side have a bright outlook
for the future of their community, which remains a beautiful place in
which to live and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, Lower East Side residents
exhibited tremendous compassion and strength of character in their
community-based efforts to help one another; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the Lower East Side's rich history and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud to pay tribute to this spirited neighborhood; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 2024, as Lower East
Side History Month in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
