        Introduced  by  Sen. PADAVAN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Investigations and Govern-
          ment Operations
 
        AN ACT to amend the Indian law,  in  relation  to  clarifying  that  the
          settlement  of  a  claim  respecting Indian lands requires the express
          consent of the legislature
 

          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section  1.  Section 7-a of the Indian law, as added by chapter 568 of
     2  the laws of 1962, is amended to read as follows:
     3    § 7-a. Purchase of lands of  Indians;  settlement  of  a  claim.    No
     4  purchase  or contract for the sale of lands of Indians in this state, or
     5  settlement of a claim respecting the lands of Indians,  shall  be  valid
     6  unless  made under the authority, and with the express consent, by stat-
     7  ute or resolution, of the legislature.
     8    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
