AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to services for inmates
of state correctional facilities
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Section 76 of the correction law, as added by chapter 506
2 of the laws of 2014, is amended to read as follows:
3 § 76. Notice of transitional services for inmates released from
4 correctional facilities. 1. Prior to the release of an inmate from a
5 correctional facility, the department shall provide such inmate with
6 information on transitional services available in the county or city
7 where such inmate is scheduled to be released. Such information shall
8 [include referrals to] include programs designed to promote the success-
9 ful and productive reentry and reintegration of an inmate into society
10 including medical and mental health services, HIV/AIDS services, educa-
11 tional, vocational and employment services, alcohol or substance abuse
12 treatment and housing services. The department shall maintain a current
13 list of transitional services which shall be updated [no less than annu-
14 ally] regularly in order to effectuate the purposes of this section.
15 Where appropriate, the department shall provide assistance to an inmate
16 in contacting a program or service provider prior to such inmate's
17 release to the community.
18 2. The commissioner shall consult with, and be entitled to receive the
19 assistance of, the commissioners of education, labor, health, mental
20 health and the office of temporary and disability assistance in the
21 implementation of this section.
22 § 2. This act shall take effect on the same date and in the same
23 manner as chapter 506 of the laws of 2014, takes effect.
