        Introduced  by  Sen. HOYLMAN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Health
 
        AN ACT directing the commissioner of health to conduct a  study  of  the
          practice  of  obstetrical  ultrasound  procedures  for non-medical and
          non-diagnostic purposes
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section  1.  a.  The  commissioner  of health is directed to conduct a
     2  study of the practice of obstetrical ultrasound procedures for non-medi-
     3  cal and non-diagnostic purposes. Subjects to be studied  shall  include,
     4  but not be limited to, the health impact of prolonged and/or unnecessary
     5  exposure  to  an  ultrasound  machine,  the  proliferation of businesses
     6  offering such services in the state, and the  adequacy  of  the  current
     7  requirements  for  operation and maintenance of ultrasound machines. The
     8  study shall contain any  recommendations  that  the  commissioner  finds
     9  necessary  for  regulatory  or statutory restrictions on the practice of
    10  non-medical and non-diagnostic obstetrical ultrasound procedures.
    11    b. The commissioner of health shall report, publish and  transmit  his
    12  or her findings to the governor, the speaker of the assembly, the minor-
    13  ity  leader  of  the assembly, the temporary president of the senate and
    14  the minority leader of the senate on or before one year  from  the  date
    15  this act shall take effect.
    16    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
