AN ACT to establish an age-related macular degeneration pilot program in
the borough of Brooklyn in New York city to assist the unmet needs of
elders dealing with age-related macular degeneration
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The New York state commission for the blind, a bureau of
2 the office of children and family services, shall establish and imple-
3 ment an age-related macular degeneration pilot program to expand
4 vision-care support services to and assist the unmet needs of elders
5 dealing with age-related macular degeneration in the borough of Brooklyn
6 in New York city.
7 § 2. The age-related macular degeneration pilot program shall consist
8 of a team of eleven state-funded ophthalmologists and group volunteers,
9 to be appointed by the New York state commission for the blind, travel-
10 ing throughout the borough of Brooklyn in New York city to provide
11 services for residents who meet the eligibility requirements set forth
12 in section three of this act, including clinical screening and diagno-
13 sis, medical treatment, education, counseling, and low vision technolo-
14 gy, such as magnifiers and screen readers.
15 § 3. The age-related macular degeneration pilot program shall provide
16 services to residents of the borough of Brooklyn who meet the following
17 criteria:
18 (a) are at least 62 years old; and
19 (b) currently suffer or have suffered from severe vision loss, and
20 have a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or less in their better
21 eye.
22 § 4. This act shall take effect immediately.
