          reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee
 
        AN  ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring instruction
          in cursive writing as part of the basic education program
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 819 to
     2  read as follows:
     3    §  819. Courses of instruction in cursive writing. The standard course
     4  of study shall include  the  requirement  that  public  schools  provide
     5  instruction  in  cursive  writing so that students create readable docu-
     6  ments through legible cursive handwriting by the end of fifth grade.
     7    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall apply to  school
     8  years  commencing on the first of July next succeeding the date on which
     9  it shall have become a law.
