          on Correction
 
        AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to requiring  the  state
          to  pay  for the delivery of the body of a deceased incarcerated indi-
          vidual to their next of kin
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. The correction law is amended by adding a new section 624-a
     2  to read as follows:
     3    §  624-a.  Death  of  incarcerated  individual;  disposition  of body.
     4  Notwithstanding any provision of law, rule or regulation to the  contra-
     5  ry,  when  an incarcerated individual dies in the custody of the depart-
     6  ment, the department shall deliver the body of such  incarcerated  indi-
     7  vidual  to their next of kin who is a relative by blood or marriage or a
     8  bona fide friend. The expense of such delivery shall  be  borne  by  the
     9  state.
    10    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
