AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to equipping
bicycles with electric assist and electric scooters with lights
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Subdivision 11 of section 1242 of the vehicle and traffic
2 law is amended by adding a new paragraph (c) to read as follows:
3 (c) No person, firm, association or corporation engaged in the busi-
4 ness of selling or leasing bicycles with electric assist shall sell or
5 lease any bicycle with electric assist unless such bicycle with electric
6 assist is equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white
7 light visible during hours of darkness from a distance of at least five
8 hundred feet to the front and with a red or amber light visible to the
9 rear for three hundred feet. Provided, however, at least one of such
10 lights shall be visible for two hundred feet from each side.
11 § 2. Subdivision 9 of section 1282 of the vehicle and traffic law is
12 amended by adding a new paragraph (c) to read as follows:
13 (c) No person, firm, association or corporation engaged in the busi-
14 ness of selling or leasing electric scooters shall sell or lease any
15 electric scooter unless such electric scooter is equipped with a lamp on
16 the front which shall emit a white light visible during hours of dark-
17 ness from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front and with
18 a red light visible to the rear for three hundred feet. Provided,
19 however, at least one of such lights shall be visible for two hundred
20 feet from each side.
21 § 3. This act shall take effect one year after it shall have become a
22 law.
