        AN  ACT  to  amend  the  education  law, in relation to requiring silent
          alarms to be installed in all school classrooms
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section  1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 409-o
     2  to read as follows:
     3    § 409-o. Silent alarms in classrooms.   1. For the  purposes  of  this
     4  section,  the  term  "silent  alarm" shall mean a security system with a
     5  button that, when pressed,  alerts  local  law  enforcement  and  school
     6  administrators that an emergency situation is occurring or imminent, but
     7  that does not otherwise make an audible alert or sound.
     8    2.  The board of education or trustees of every school district or, in
     9  the case of the city school district of New York,  the  chancellor,  and
    10  every  board  of  cooperative  educational  services, charter school and
    11  nonpublic school within the state shall  cause  a  silent  alarm  to  be
    12  installed  in every classroom in a location readily accessible to teach-
    13  ers.
    14    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
