BY: Senator WALCZYK

COMMEMORATING the 135th Anniversary of the City of
        Gloversville, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the City of Gloversville in Fulton
County, New York; and

WHEREAS, The land where current day Gloversville is located was
settled as early as 1752, with the plentiful hemlock forests providing
necessary resources for tanning or making leather, as well as creating
leather and gloves; and

WHEREAS, In 1828, the community officially became known as
Gloversville; it was previously referred to as "Stump City" due to the
number of stumps in the city leftover from hemlock harvesting; and

WHEREAS, From 1890 to 1950, 90% of all gloves in USA were made in
Gloversville; and

WHEREAS, The city was able to thrive due to the number of ancillary
businesses  and  industries  which  supported the glove making industry;
such businesses included sewing machine repairers, box makers, thread
dealers, and others; and

WHEREAS, Gloversville also had an electric interurban line which was
very advanced, connecting it to Johnstown and Fonda until 1936,
contributing to the growth of the city and population; and

WHEREAS, Gloversville was formally incorporated as a village in
1853, then a city in 1890; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the City of Gloversville continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the City of Gloversville, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the City of Gloversville.
