Senate Resolution No. 458

BY: Senator MAY

HONORING the Syracuse Central School District's
first ever Girls Wrestling Team for being
trailblazers in the sport of wrestling

WHEREAS, Athletic competition helps to enhance both the moral and
physical development of young athletes, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the importance of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, and developing a sense of fair play and competition; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body commends rare athletic achievements
and pays special recognition to those who pursue such excellence and
become examples for the youth of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the Syracuse
Central School District's first ever Girls Wrestling Team for being
trailblazers in the sport of wrestling, and congratulating them upon the
occasion of winning their inaugural match; and

WHEREAS, The Syracuse Central School District's creation of its
first ever Girls Wrestling Team is a monumental step toward ensuring
equity regarding accessibility to sports for all students; and

WHEREAS, In a traditionally male-dominated sport, the creation and
successes of the Syracuse Girls Wrestling Team sets an example about the
importance of inclusivity and fairness in sports; and

WHEREAS, This new dedicated team gives girls a platform to build
self-confidence, teamwork skills, and resilience through athletic
competition; such an opportunity can empower young women to take pride
in their abilities and strengths and pursue goals that were
traditionally unavailable to them due to gender-based restrictions; and

WHEREAS, The Girls Wrestling Team was started in October of 2024,
with the athletes practicing in socks rather than in standard wrestling
shoes, proving their unrelenting dedication to the sport regardless of
any obstacles; thanks to generous donors, the athletes were able to
secure proper equipment, ensuring their readiness for competition; and

WHEREAS, A sport such as wrestling, which requires skill,
dedication, strength, and athletic prowess, is also a healthy way for
young individuals to channel and release negative emotions such as
anger, while building important interpersonal relationships with their
peers and coach; and

WHEREAS, Coach Heather Niver and all the outstanding athletes on the
Syracuse Central School District Girls Wrestling Team have clearly
utilized dedication, determination, and teamwork in providing a lasting
contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their
school; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Syracuse Central School District's first ever Girls Wrestling
Team for being trailblazers in the sport of wrestling; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Coach Heather Niver and the members of the Syracuse
Central School District's Girls Wrestling Team.
