Senate Resolution No. 1253

COMMENDING John T. Golden, Sr., posthumously, upon
the occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this esteemed Body; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend John T.
Golden, Sr., posthumously, upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; this prestigious honor will be
awarded at the Saratoga County Honor a Deceased Veteran Ceremony on
Tuesday, July 15, 2025; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, On April 11, 1926, John T. Golden, Sr., was born to James
and Hannah Golden in Bronx, New York; he graduated from Long Beach High
and attended CW Post College; and
WHEREAS, On February 5, 1943, John T. Golden, Sr., entered the
United States Navy; he was trained in diesel mechanics and demolitions,
and he was qualified in submarines; he served first as Fireman and
later, as Motor Mechanics Mate; and
WHEREAS, John T. Golden, Sr., served in World War II, which took him
to several Naval Amphibious Assault bases in England, as well as serving
onboard a Landing Ship, Tank (LST) during the D -Day Invasion and
subsequent transport operations; and
WHEREAS, John T. Golden, Sr., was later assigned onboard the
transport ship, the USS General LeRoy Eltinge, participating in
Operation Magic Carpet which would take him across the world to China;
another transport ship, the USS General W. F. Hase, would return him
home to the United States; and
WHEREAS, For his bravery, selflessness, and proud service on behalf
of his fellow Americans, John T. Golden, Sr., was honored with the Good
Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the European Campaign
Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal; he was honorably discharged
on March 18, 1946; and
WHEREAS, After his return to the United States, John T. Golden, Sr.,
married the love of his life, Geraldine, on September 1, 1951; the
couple were blessed with five children; and
WHEREAS, John T. Golden, Sr., was a 20-year employee of the Nassau
County Police Department, 4th Precinct, serving as Detective in the
Narcotics Division and Homicide Division; following his retirement in
1972, he and Geraldine moved to Day, New York, where he worked at the
International Paper Company in Corinth until his final retirement in
1988; and
WHEREAS, John T. Golden, Sr., was a member and Past Commander of the
Hudson-Sacandaga VFW Post No. 5836, a member of the William J. Varney
American Legion Post No. 862, and the Roosevelt Rod and Gun Club until
his death on May 27, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism, both at home and abroad,
John T. Golden, Sr., demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended,
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State, and their
Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend John T. Golden, Sr., posthumously, upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed
upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of John T. Golden, Sr.
