Senate Resolution No. 1719

        COMMEMORATING  the  100th  Anniversary  of Guthrie
        Lourdes Hospital
 
  WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality of life in the communities across this great  State  of  New
York  is  enriched  by  the  concerned  and  dedicated  efforts of those
organizations of distinction whose singular  purpose  is  the  care  and
welfare of others; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate   the   100th   Anniversary  of  Guthrie  Lourdes  Hospital,
celebrated in November 2025; and
 
  WHEREAS, In 1925, at the  request  of  Bishop  Daniel  Curley,  four
sisters  from the Daughters of Charity (Martina Disney, Gertrude Eisele,
Rose Anna Hastings, and Louise McParland)  arrived  in  Binghamton,  New
York with a mission to provide compassionate care; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  hospital  originally opened as the 25-bed Our Lady of
Lourdes Memorial Hospital inside the Corbett Mansion on Riverside  Drive
in Binghamton, NY; and
 
  WHEREAS, In 1938, a replica of the famous Grotto at Lourdes, France,
was  built  on  the  hospital  grounds  to  provide a place of peace for
patients and families; while the original was moved during expansions, a
version remains a landmark on the property today; and
 
  WHEREAS, In 1983, Lourdes  Hospital  was  selected  by  the  federal
government  for  a  national  cancer  research project, establishing its
reputation in oncology; and
 
  WHEREAS, Lourdes Hospital joined Ascension Health in 1999,  becoming
part of the largest Catholic health system in the country; and
 
  WHEREAS,  In  2006,  the  hospital survived a devastating flood that
caused over $20 million in damage, leading to  significant  renovations;
and
 
  WHEREAS,  On  February  1,  2024, Lourdes Hospital transitioned from
Ascension Health to The Guthrie Clinic, a  non-profit  system  based  in
Sayre, Pennsylvania; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Over  its long history, Guthrie Lourdes Hospital has grown
from a small neighborhood hospital into a 197-bed acute  care  facility;
it  has  developed  a network of primary care offices, a Regional Cancer
Center, and unique services like mobile mammography and dental  vans  to
reach rural areas; and
 
  WHEREAS,  This  Legislative  Body recognizes the vital importance of
Guthrie  Lourdes  Hospital  in  providing  excellence  in  care  through
prevention,  education and treatment, and its evident commitment to this
mission; now, therefore, be it
 
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate  the  100th  Anniversary  of   Guthrie   Lourdes   Hospital,
recognizing  and  commending  the  hospital's  unwavering  dedication to
providing essential healthcare services to Binghamton  and  beyond,  and
acknowledging   the   invaluable   contributions   of   its   healthcare
professionals, staff, and leadership in making Guthrie Lourdes  Hospital
a trusted and vital institution within the community; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Guthrie Lourdes Hospital.
