MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
March 15-21, 2026, as Surveyors Week in the State of
New York, in conjunction with the observance of
National Surveyors Week
WHEREAS, There are approximately 1,400 professional land surveyors
in New York State and approximately 48,000 professional land surveyors
nationwide; and
WHEREAS, Land surveyors were instrumental in the formation of the
layout of property boundaries in New York State and the rest of the
United States, providing our citizens the opportunity to enjoy the dream
of property ownership; and
WHEREAS, United States Presidents George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson, John Adams, and Abraham Lincoln all served as surveyors,
contributing to the historical mapping of the United States in its early
years; and
WHEREAS, The nature of surveying has developed since the Colonial
Era to include hydrographic surveys, engineering surveys utilized in the
study and selection of engineering construction, geodetic surveys to
determine the precise global positioning for activities such as aircraft
and missile navigation, and cartographic surveys used for mapping and
charting; and
WHEREAS, The surveying profession in New York State requires special
education and experience, training, the knowledge of applied
mathematics, other technical and research skills, and passage of both
national and state-specific examinations; and
WHEREAS, The role of the professional surveyor has been, and
continues to be, essential in the development and advancement of our
State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, In New York State, there are 19 affiliated regional
professional land surveying organizations that combine to form the New
York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors and are affiliated
with the National Society of Professional Land Surveyors; and
WHEREAS, New Yorkers recognize the important contributions of
professional land surveyors to the historical and current layout of the
State and Nation and acknowledge the important decisions that
professional land surveyors make on the basis of specialized knowledge
and expertise; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim March 15-21, 2026, as
Surveyors Week in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of National Surveyors Week; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
