Senate Resolution No. 1856

        COMMEMORATING   the   Centennial   Anniversary  of
        Hendrick Hudson High School
 
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to  recognize  and
honor  those  enduring  institutions  which, through their commitment to
education and community, have profoundly contributed to the  development
and vitality of the State of New York; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate  the  Centennial Anniversary of Hendrick Hudson High School,
to be celebrated  with  a  myriad  of  events  throughout  Spring  2026,
including  a Time Capsule Reveal and Dedication, as well as a Centennial
Gala on May 30, 2026, in Ossining, New York; and
 
  WHEREAS, Founded in 1926, Hendrick Hudson High School has stood as a
beacon of learning, achievement, and  community  pride  for  100  years,
fostering  generations  of students under the enduring spirit of "Sailor
Pride"; and
 
  WHEREAS, The year 1926 marked a pivotal chapter in  the  history  of
the  Hendrick Hudson school community, as the high school was officially
designated Hendrick Hudson High  School  and  plans  for  its  dedicated
building were set into motion; and
 
  WHEREAS,  This  milestone  was  the  culmination of forward-thinking
efforts which began in 1925, when, on March 31, district voters approved
the purchase of the Shedd property on  Albany  Post  Road  for  $24,000,
laying the foundation for a new era in public education; and
 
  WHEREAS,  On  October  31, 1925, architects Knappe and Morris of New
York City completed plans for the new  high  school  building,  with  an
estimated  cost  not  to  exceed  $326,000, reflecting both ambition and
careful stewardship of public resources; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  community  overwhelmingly  endorsed  the   Board   of
Education's  plan  to  construct  the  new  school  on December 3, 1925,
demonstrating  a  shared  commitment  to  educational   excellence   and
opportunity; and
 
  WHEREAS,  On  May  13,  1926,  voters  approved  the renaming of the
district to Central School District No. 3, establishing  the  district's
modern  boundaries and enabling access to vital state funding to support
construction; and
 
  WHEREAS, The groundbreaking ceremony for  the  new  Hendrick  Hudson
High  School  was  held on May 27, 1926 in Montrose, marking a moment of
unity and optimism, as members of the Board of Education  and  community
leaders ceremonially turned the first shovelful of earth; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Among those present at this historic event were contractor
Louis Kiel; supervising principal Frank G. Lindsey; Board  of  Education
President Thomas Cole, who laid the cornerstone; and Board members David
 
O.  Henion,  James Chase, James Herbert Ferris, and George Welsch, whose
leadership helped bring this vision to fruition; and
 
  WHEREAS,  These efforts culminated in the completion of the new high
school building  in  1928,  providing  a  permanent  home  for  academic
excellence and community engagement; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Over  the  past  century,  Hendrick Hudson High School has
distinguished itself through  its  unwavering  dedication  to  educating
young  people,  cultivating civic responsibility, and nurturing a strong
sense of identity and pride among its students and alumni; and
 
  WHEREAS, The Centennial Anniversary of Hendrick Hudson  High  School
provides an opportunity to reflect upon its rich history, honor its many
contributions,  and  celebrate  its  continued  role  in  shaping future
generations; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the  Centennial Anniversary of Hendrick Hudson High School,
recognizing 100 years of learning, legacy, and Sailor Pride; and  be  it
further
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Hendrick Hudson High School.
