Senate Resolution No. 1910

        COMMENDING  the  Queens  Public  Library's Central
        Library upon the occasion of  celebrating  its  60th
        Anniversary
 
  WHEREAS,  It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay  tribute  to  those  organizations  of  high  purpose   and   worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commend the Queens Public Library's Central Library upon the occasion of
celebrating its 60th Anniversary on Monday, April 20, 2026; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  original  Queens  Public Library's Central Library on
Parsons Boulevard in Jamaica, New York was opened in 1930, and  expanded
with WPA funds in 1941; and
 
  WHEREAS,  In  spite  of  its  elegance,  the  original Queens Public
Library's Central  Library's  splendid  four-story  Renaissance  Revival
building proved too small for the demand and was replaced by a new, more
spacious facility in 1966, through the persistent efforts of the Library
Director, Harold W. Tucker; and
 
  WHEREAS, The building was renovated and expanded in 1989, then again
in 2012-2014 to keep up with a growing demand for library services; and
 
  WHEREAS, In 2011, a 14,000- square foot Children's Library Discovery
Center  opened that concentrates on math and science topics; it includes
hands-on exhibits  and  library  materials  that  entertain  while  they
educate in a child-friendly way; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The Queens Public Library boasts an impressive system that
includes the Flushing Library,  that  is  the  busiest  library  in  the
country,  serving  1.7 million visitors annually and the Central Library
building, which has the distinction among the three city library systems
of having most public services on one floor; and
 
  WHEREAS, The success of the Queens Public Library's Central  Library
is   in  direct  correlation  to  the  efforts  of  its  members,  whose
involvement is, and always has  been,  characterized  by  an  impressive
commitment,  an  unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors; and
 
  WHEREAS, Under the exemplary leadership of Dennis Walcott, President
and  CEO  of  Queens  Public  Library,  the  library   has   experienced
exponential growth and continues to serve the diverse population that is
Queens County; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Steeped  in  a proud and distinguished history, the Queens
Public Library's Central Library may take just pride in  its  purposeful
growth,  as  it  looks  forward  to continuing to serve the educational,
cultural and intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it
 
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Queens Public Library's Central Library upon the occasion of
celebrating its 60th Anniversary on Monday, April 20, 2026;  and  be  it
further
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Queens Public Library's Central Library.
