Senate Resolution No. 2048

        COMMEMORATING  the  30th  Anniversary  of Greenest
        Block in Brooklyn, an  annual  contest  by  Brooklyn
        Botanical Garden
 
  WHEREAS,  It  is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those organizations and events  which  are  dedicated  to
building  community  and  promoting beautification in this Empire State;
and
 
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and  in  full  accord  with  its
long-standing  traditions,  this  Legislative  Body  is  justly proud to
commemorate the 30th Anniversary  of  Greenest  Block  in  Brooklyn,  an
annual contest by Brooklyn Botanical Garden; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  annual  Greenest  Block  in Brooklyn contest promotes
streetscape gardening and a sense of community throughout the borough by
encouraging residents of city blocks to join  together  in  adding  more
plant life and greenery to their properties; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest is free and open to
all residential blocks, commercial  blocks,  and  community  gardens  in
Brooklyn; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  benefits  of  urban  vegetation  include improved air
quality,  reduction  of  greenhouse  gas  emissions,   increased   shade
coverage, and overall cooling effects on neighborhoods and houses; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  beautification  of  a  city block through streetscape
gardening can elevate community pride, increase  property  value,  boost
local   commerce   and  tourism,  improve  mental  health,  and  enhance
pedestrian safety; and
 
  WHEREAS, The award categories for the  Greenest  Block  in  Brooklyn
contest  are:  Best  Overall  Residential Block, Best Overall Commercial
Block, Greenest Storefront, Best Window Box, Best Street Tree Beds, Best
Community Garden Streetscape, Rookie of the Year, Special Commendations,
and the Sustainable Practices Award; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  winning  street  blocks  receive   cash   prizes,   a
recognition  ceremony,  gift  bags  of  fall  bulbs, and certificates of
recognition; a press conference is also held on the winning  residential
block; and
 
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the welfare of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched
and  reliably  served by the purposeful endeavors of organizations which
are committed to the enhancement and  appreciation  of  the  distinctive
beauty  of  our  surroundings  and  to  the  well-being  of  our State's
communities; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the  30th  Anniversary  of  Greenest  Block in Brooklyn, an
annual contest by Brooklyn Botanical Garden; and be it further
 
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Brooklyn Botanical Garden.
