Senate Resolution No. 2744

        COMMENDING  John  Joseph  Gorman, MD, posthumously
        upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
        a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon  an
        individual by the New York State Senate
 
  WHEREAS,  Members  of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so  valiantly  and  honorably  in  wars  in  which  this
country's  freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this esteemed Body; and
 
  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body  is  justly  proud  to  commend  John
Joseph  Gorman, MD, posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of a  Liberty  Medal,  the  highest  honor  bestowed  upon  an
individual by the New York State Senate; and
 
  WHEREAS,  A resident of Schenectady, John Joseph Gorman, MD, will be
honored by the Schenectady County Honor-a-Veteran Committee  during  the
Award  Ceremony,  held at St. Luke's Pastoral Center in Schenectady, New
York, on Saturday, December 7, 2024; and
 
  WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established  by
Resolution  and  is  awarded  to  individuals  who  have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf  of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
 
  WHEREAS,  John Joseph Gorman was born to Richard and Minna Gorman in
Syracuse, New York, on August 29, 1928; he graduated  from  Draper  High
School;  continuing  his  education,  he  graduated  with  a Bachelor of
Science in Biology from Union College in Schenectady in  1950;  he  also
earned  both  a  master's degree in biology and chemistry and a teaching
certificate from New York State College for Teachers in Albany; and
 
  WHEREAS, Accepted to medical school, John Joseph Gorman had  to  put
his  goals  on  hold  as  he  was drafted into the United States Army on
September 23, 1952, serving his country in  the  Radiation  Division  of
Radiobiology  at  the  Army  Medical  Research  Laboratory in Fort Knox,
Kentucky; he was discharged from his military duties, as a corporal,  on
September  3,  1954;  for  his  exemplary  service,  he  was awarded the
National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal; and
 
  WHEREAS, Marie Bove, the girl who lived around the corner, went from
being John Joseph Gorman's best friend's sister to the love of his  life
during  the  years  he  attended  graduate school; letters and telephone
calls during the Army years strengthened their  bond,  and  on  a  short
visit home, the soldier proposed marriage; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Shortly  after  the  wedding, the couple moved to Syracuse
where John Joseph  Gorman  attended  SUNY  Upstate  Medical  University,
graduating  in 1958; he spent his residency in Syracuse, specializing in
radiology; and
 
  WHEREAS, Returning to Schenectady, John Joseph Gorman completed  his
fellowship  and  commenced  his  career  as  a radiologist and Associate
 
Professor of Radiology at Albany Medical Center; in 1965, he joined  St.
Clare's  Hospital  where he began a distinguished 37-year-long career in
the X-ray Department; until his retirement in 1997, he served  as  Chief
of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Hosting  family parties, swimming, and vacationing on Cape
Cod with his family were enjoyable pastimes for Dr. John Joseph  Gorman;
some  hobbies  he  relished were scouting for antique treasures, reading
voraciously, researching his family's history, listening to Irish music,
and imparting his wit and wisdom to everyone; aside  from  free  medical
advice  he  gave  daily,  he  was known to give of himself with care and
compassion; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Alongside  his  wife,  Marie,  Dr.  John   Joseph   Gorman
volunteered his time and talent to numerous causes in Schenectady; after
his  retirement,  he consulted on cases for MLMIC, a medical malpractice
insurance company, and served on the board of the  Samaritan  Counseling
Center; he was also a long-time member of the Schenectady County Medical
Society  and  Past President of the New York State Radiological Society;
and
 
  WHEREAS, Dr. John Joseph Gorman earned the  St.  Clare's  Spirit  of
Healing  Award,  as well as a Proclamation from the City of Schenectady,
designating January 24, 1997, as Dr. John J. Gorman Day; and
 
  WHEREAS, John Joseph Gorman, MD, died on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the
age of 95; he is missed by all who count themselves  fortunate  to  have
shared their lives with him; and
 
  WHEREAS,  John Joseph Gorman, MD, is survived by his best friend and
loving wife of 70 years, Maire; his seven children, Rick (Diana) Gorman,
Kathy  (Barry)  Denison,  Maureen  Beebe,  Eileen  (Terrence)  Donnelly,
Colleen (Jack) Judge, Tim (Kathy) Gorman, and Christine (Chris) Molluso;
25 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six
step-great-grandchildren;  his  brother, Jim (Mary) Gorman; and numerous
cherished nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends; he  is  predeceased  by
his  parents,  Richard and Minna; his brother, Richard; and his sisters,
Marilyn and Kathleen; and
 
  WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at  home  and  abroad,
John Joseph Gorman, MD, demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended,
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication  to  their  communities,  their  State,  and  their
Nation; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend John Joseph Gorman, MD, posthumously upon the  occasion  of  his
designation  as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed
upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to the family of John Joseph Gorman, MD.
