Senate Resolution No. 399

        COMMENDING  Stanley  Maltzman upon the occasion of
        his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the
        highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
        York State Senate
 
  WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of  New  York,
who  have  served  so  valiantly  and  honorably  in  wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of  peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
 
  WHEREAS,  This  Legislative  Body is justly proud to commend Stanley
Maltzman upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a  Liberty
Medal,  the  highest  honor  bestowed upon an individual by the New York
State Senate, to be celebrated at the Annual Greene  County  Honor-a-Vet
Veteran-of-the-Year  Ceremony  on  Saturday,  November  2,  2024, at the
Historic Catskill Point Warehouse in Catskill, New York; and
 
  WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established  by
Resolution  and  is  awarded  to  individuals  who  have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf  of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Stanley Maltzman was born to Abraham and Sarah Maltzman on
July 4, 1921, in Bronx, New York; he attended Public School No.  90  and
Theodore  Roosevelt  High School; he also attended the Phoenix School of
Design from 1946-1949, obtaining his degree in art and  commercial  art;
and
 
  WHEREAS,  After  serving  as  a volunteer for the United States Navy
Reserve, Stanley Maltzman entered the United States Coast Guard on March
26, 1942, as Apprentice Seaman; at the Brooklyn Navy  Yard,  he  boarded
the  U.S.S.   Centaurus (AKA-17) which crossed the Panama Canal en route
to the Pacific Ocean; the crew of the  Navy  ship  participated  in  six
invasions, including Los Negros, Guam, and Okinawa; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Stanley  Maltzman was discharged as Signalman, First Class
at the Coast Guard Personnel Separation Center No. 3  in  Brooklyn,  New
York, on May 1, 1946; and
 
  WHEREAS,  For  his  dedicated  service  to  his  country  and fellow
citizens, Signalman First Class Stanley Maltzman  earned  the  following
awards:  Navy  Combat  Ribbon;  World  War  II  Victory  Medal; American
Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; and Good Conduct  Medal;
and
 
  WHEREAS,  Stanley  Maltzman  and  his  wife, Rachel, were married on
August 17, 1947, in Bronx, New York; the couple were  blessed  with  two
daughters,  Carole  and  Susan;  through  the years, the Maltzman family
expanded to include four grandchildren, Megan, Katie, Will,  and  Sarah,
and two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Conor; and
 
  WHEREAS,  In his civilian life, Stanley Maltzman found employment in
commercial art as Studio Director, Art Director, and  Account  Executive
prior to working as an independent artist which he still enjoys; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Remaining  active  in  his community, Stanley Maltzman was
involved in numerous organizations such as Boy Scouts of America and the
Greene County Council on the Arts; in 1999,  he  organized  the  Tuesday
Night Sketchers at the Greenville Library which still continues to offer
both  aspiring  and  experienced  artists  opportunities for independent
study; and
 
  WHEREAS, Through reunions, Stanley Maltzman remained in contact with
many of his shipmates and their families for  25  years;  the  very  few
surviving  crewmen have difficulty traveling so they contact one another
through telephone calls; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  crewmen  have  added  to  the  richness  of   Stanley
Maltzman's life, and he is truly grateful; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Having  exhibited  his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Stanley Maltzman has demonstrated his love for his  country  and  merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended,
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication  to  their  communities,  their  State,  and  their
Nation; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Stanley  Maltzman  upon  the  occasion  of  his  designation  as
recipient  of  a  Liberty  Medal,  the  highest  honor  bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to Stanley Maltzman.
