COMMEMORATING the 75th Anniversary of the Sands
Point Garden Club on, August 6, 2025
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Sands Point Garden Club, to be
celebrated on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Sensory Garden at the
Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults in Sands
Point, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Sands Point Garden Club's mission is to encourage
interest in all phases of home gardening and to promote better
horticultural practices, civic beauty, and the conservation of natural
resources; and
WHEREAS, Over its 75 years, the Sands Point Garden Club has led the
way in securing the designation of Tree City USA in conjunction with the
Village of Sands Point, observed Arbor Day each April by distributing
saplings to the residents, by planting trees in the village, and hosted
plantings, emphasizing native species, at the Village Hall and the
Village Club of Sands Point; and
WHEREAS, Over 40 years ago, in partnership with the Helen Keller
National Center (HKNC) and with community members of Port Washington,
the Sands Point Garden Club created a Sensory Garden on the campus,
providing clients and staff with a fragrant and tactile oasis of
plantings and trees; and
WHEREAS, In support of the local youth, the Sands Point Garden Club
supported the planting of the Shakespeare Garden at the Paul D.
Schreiber High School and established a scholarship for a graduating
senior interested in horticulture, botany, and environmental science;
and
WHEREAS, More recent programs implemented by the Sands Point Garden
Club include: "Climate Change in New York State," "Beauty Run Rampant"
(invasive species), as well as floral design and visits to Planting
Fields and the Cornell Co-operative Extension in East Meadow, New York;
and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 75-year history, the Sands Point
Garden Club has demonstrated continuous service to the residents and
communities which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Sands Point Garden Club is in direct
correlation to the efforts of President Fern Cohen, officers, and its
dedicated members, whose involvement is, and always has been,
characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and
an uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of
the organization and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, In light of its commitment, dedication and successful
efforts, it is the custom of this Legislative Body to extend its highest
commendation to the Sands Point Garden Club; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Sands Point Garden Club, on
August 6, 2025; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Sands Point Garden Club.
