COMMENDING Sanford I. Roth posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this esteemed Body; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Sanford I.
Roth posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 5, 1938 to Leon and Rachel Roth in Albany,
New York, Sanford I. "Sandy" Roth graduated from Albany High School and
Siena College; additionally, he earned his master's degree from Russell
Sage College; and
WHEREAS, After college and ROTC, on May 28, 1962, Sanford I. Roth
enlisted in the United States Army; he was commissioned as a Field
Artillery Officer and assigned to Baumholder, Germany, with the
Headquarters Battery of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Field Artillery Regiment;
and
WHEREAS, For his three years of valiant service in Germany, Sanford
I. Roth was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good
Conduct Medal; on September 7, 1965, he was discharged at the esteemed
rank of 1st Lieutenant; and
WHEREAS, Sanford I. Roth married the love of his life, Carole, on
August 3, 1962, and the couple were blessed with four children; he was
employed as VFO by St. Peter's Hospital in Albany and retired from
Bellevue Women's Hospital as Vice President of Finance; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Clifton Park, New York, Sanford I. Roth was
elected to the Clifton Park Town Board and served as a Town Councilman
from 1992-2009; he was instrumental in establishing the Town's Hazardous
Waste Day; in 2009, he received the Key to the Town of Clifton Park for
his service to the community; and
WHEREAS, From 2010 until his death, Sanford I. Roth was Assistant to
the Town Supervisor, serving on various boards and committees, including
the Highway Department, Environmental Conservation Commission (ECC),
Youth Court, and EMS; he was also a member of the Ballston Lake
Emergency Squad; and
WHEREAS, Sanford I. Roth was active in the Clifton Park Elks, BPOE
No. 2466, and was named Elk of the Year, Officer of the Year, and Inner
Guard of the Lodge; and
WHEREAS, Sanford I. Roth died on January 11, 2020, at the age of 81;
all who count themselves fortunate to have shared their lives with him
will deeply miss this beloved veteran; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that to those who risked their lives
for their beloved Nation; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Sanford I. Roth demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended,
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State, and their
Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Sanford I. Roth posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed
upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Sanford I. Roth.
