        COMMEMORATING  the  60th  Anniversary  of John Jay
        College of Criminal Justice
 
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize  and
pay   tribute   to   those  institutions  of  high  purpose  and  worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served  the  citizens  of
the State of New York; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate  the  60th  Anniversary  of  John  Jay  College  of Criminal
Justice; and
 
  WHEREAS, John Jay College of Criminal  Justice,  part  of  the  City
University  of  New  York  (CUNY)  system,  is  a proud higher-education
institution in New York City which  was  named  after  the  first  Chief
Justice  of  our State and Nation and second Governor of New York State;
and
 
  WHEREAS, Committed to diversity and serving individuals of minority,
Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent,
John Jay College of Criminal Justice has evolved into a premier  liberal
arts, justice-focused college since it was established in 1965; and
 
  WHEREAS,  For six decades, John Jay College faculty, administrators,
and staff have fueled student  success  and  propelled  social  mobility
through  academic  excellence, transformative programs, and hands-on and
faculty-mentored  research  and  community  service   initiatives;   the
successful  institution  is  recognized as the number one college in our
nation  for  criminal  justice,  forensic  science,  and  legal  studies
programs; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Today,  John  Jay  College  of  Criminal  Justice  remains
committed to preparing students to be fierce advocates for  justice  and
lifelong   leadership;  its  retention  and  degree-completion  programs
support academic attainment and career development which ensure  success
at John Jay and beyond; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Initiatives,  including  the  Honors  Program, Program for
Research Initiatives in Science & Math  (PRISM),  Accelerate,  Complete,
and   Engage   (ACE),   and  the  McNair  Achievement  Program,  provide
mentorship, financial assistance,  and  curated  advising,  among  other
experiences,  to  enhance  the academic abilities of students, help them
achieve their undergraduate degrees, and pursue lifelong learning; and
 
  WHEREAS, Internship and fellowship  opportunities  connect  students
with  leading professionals, while career services prepare them for life
beyond graduation; these programs create a strong foundation  and  forge
pathways to fulfilling graduate study and professional careers; and
 
  WHEREAS,  John  Jay  College  of  Criminal  Justice is an engine for
academic momentum and professional  success  for  entering  high  school
 
graduates,  as  well  as  transfer  students,  with approximately 13,000
students; and
 
  WHEREAS,  John  Jay  College,  continually  named  a "Best for Vets"
college, is also the proud home to approximately  650  student-veterans,
Reservists,  National  Guard, active duty, and VA-benefit family members
which is more than any other  CUNY  campus  and  most  colleges  in  the
Northeast;  with the support of the John Jay College Foundation Board of
Trustees and its partners, an array of programs to  help  United  States
service  members  reintegrate  into  civilian life and contribute to the
City and State is provided; and
 
  WHEREAS, In recognition of the expanding research activity  at  John
Jay  College,  earning  more  than  $31 million in research funding, the
College was formally designated as a Research College and University  by
the  American  Council  on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the
Advancement of Teaching, a  new  classification  that  demonstrates  the
College's  impactful  scholarship  in  criminal  justice, public policy,
forensic science, human rights, and social justice; and
 
  WHEREAS, After the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, John  Jay
College  of  Criminal  Justice  established  programs, research centers,
scholarships, and a special memorial to honor the 67 students,  faculty,
and  alumni  who  lost  their  lives  on  that  tragic  day; the College
continues to pay tribute to the legacy of those victims and  alumni  who
succumb  to  9/11-related  illnesses  through  ceremonies  and community
service projects; and
 
  WHEREAS, This 60th Anniversary is a reflection of John Jay College's
significant legacy of contributions to  our  State  and  Nation  and  an
acknowledgement  of  its  work  to  advance students' success and foster
generations of justice leaders; and
 
  WHEREAS, It  is  the  sense  of  this  Legislative  Body  that  when
institutions  of  such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the  citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the  60th  Anniversary  of  John  Jay  College  of  Criminal
Justice; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
