COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes great pride in recognizing and
celebrating institutions of historical and cultural significance that
have played an essential role in shaping our communities and preserving
our histories; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Schomburg Center for Research
in Black Culture of Harlem, New York, to be celebrated at its Centennial
Festival on Saturday, June 14, 2025; and
WHEREAS, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is a
national landmark and is recognized as a world-renowned research center
within the New York Public Library system; and
WHEREAS, With a collection of 11 million items, the Schomburg Center
for Research in Black Culture is the world's leading cultural
institution devoted to the research, preservation, and exhibition of
materials focused on African American, African Diasporic, and African
experiences; and
WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1925, the Schomburg Center for
Research in Black Culture has remained committed to the preservation and
exhibition of its collection for local, national, and international
communities; and
WHEREAS, The wide-ranging and expansive collection of the Schomburg
Center for Research in Black Culture illuminates the richness of global
Black history, arts, and culture; and
WHEREAS, As a research center of the New York Public Library, the
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture boasts an array of public
programs that elevate the visibility of its extensive archive, convene
the public in meaningful conversations, celebrate the brilliance of the
African Diaspora, and promote historical literacy in the context of
Black life; and
WHEREAS, To celebrate its 100 years of operation, the Schomburg
Center for Research in Black Culture is hosting its Schomburg Centennial
Festival on Saturday, June 14, 2025, which will feature readings, panel
discussions, workshops, photo activations, bookish marketplace, a mobile
library, musical performances, a block party, and more; and
WHEREAS, The dedicated staff and volunteers of the Schomburg Center
for Research in Black Culture have worked tirelessly to uphold its
long-standing reputation, and together they have committed to supporting
all individuals that engage with their organization and programs; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black
Culture has served as a testament to the important connection between
history, research, and community, and this noble organization has proven
the undeniable impact that research institutions can have on local
residents and visitors alike; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Schomburg Center for Research
in Black Culture of Harlem, New York, recognizing its cultural
significance and its continued service to the community; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
