        COMMEMORATING May 2026 as the 142nd Anniversary of
        the  groundbreaking  of the construction of Sagamore
        Hill in Oyster Bay, New York
 
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize  and
pay  tribute  to landmarks of historical significance that contribute to
the rich cultural and political heritage of the State of  New  York  and
the United States of America; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate  May  2026 as the 142nd Anniversary of the groundbreaking of
the construction of  Sagamore  Hill,  the  historic  home  of  President
Theodore Roosevelt, located in Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New York; and
 
  WHEREAS, In May 1884, following the purchase of 155 acres of land in
Cove  Neck,  Theodore  Roosevelt began construction on what would become
Sagamore Hill, ultimately completing the house in 1885 and making it his
permanent residence; and
 
  WHEREAS, Sagamore Hill would go on to serve  not  only  as  Theodore
Roosevelt's family home but also as a center of political and diplomatic
activity,  especially  during  his presidency from 1901 to 1909, when it
was affectionately known as the "Summer White House"; and
 
  WHEREAS, As the home of one of the  most  consequential  figures  in
American   history--statesman,   conservationist,   Nobel   Peace  Prize
laureate, and the 26th President  of  the  United  States-Sagamore  Hill
stands  today  as  a  tangible symbol of Theodore Roosevelt's legacy and
character; and
 
  WHEREAS, The beginning of Sagamore Hill's construction in  May  1884
marked  the  first  step  in the creation of a residence that would host
world leaders, serve as a site of significant political  discourse,  and
become a cornerstone of American heritage; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Today,  Sagamore  Hill is preserved as a National Historic
Site under  the  stewardship  of  the  National  Park  Service,  and  it
continues  to  educate  and  inspire visitors from across the Nation and
around the world; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  142nd  Anniversary  of  the  groundbreaking  of   the
construction of Sagamore Hill offers an important opportunity to reflect
on  our  shared  history  and recommit to the preservation of sites that
honor the ideals and achievements of our Nation's past; now,  therefore,
be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate May 2026 as the 142nd Anniversary of the  groundbreaking  of
the  construction of Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, New York, and to honor
the vision and enduring legacy of President Theodore Roosevelt;  and  be
it further
 
  RESOLVED,  That  copies  of  this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the National  Park  Service  at  Sagamore  Hill  National
Historic Site and to historical organizations which are dedicated to the
legacy of Theodore Roosevelt.
