Assembly Resolution No. 1143

BY: M. of A. Clark

COMMENDING the IBS Patient Support Group upon the
occasion of observing its 7th Annual World IBS Day
        on April 19, 2026

WHEREAS, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal
disorder of gut-brain interaction that is characterized by recurring
abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel movement; although many
Americans suffer from individual symptoms, they do not realize it is a
medical condition called IBS, and for this reason, it often goes
undiagnosed by physicians and patients; and

WHEREAS, The symptoms of IBS affect up to 20 percent of the
population, or just over 35 million Americans; the quality of life is
significantly lower in people suffering from the symptoms of IBS than in
healthy people; and

WHEREAS, Although IBS has a considerable impact on personal
relationships and working practices, people with these symptoms often
suffer in silence because of their reluctance to discuss their pain; and

WHEREAS, Numerous organizations in New York State, including the IBS
Patient Support Group, are committed to supporting people suffering with
the symptoms of IBS, inclusive of raising public awareness, discovering
innovative therapies, and providing patient educational materials; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the IBS Patient Support Group upon the occasion of observing its
7th Annual World IBS Day on April 19, 2026, and to encourage all
residents of the State of New York to support and participate in
organizations,  events,  and  activities that raise awareness about IBS;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the IBS Patient Support Group.
