Assembly Resolution No. 131

        COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
        Savannah, New York, on February 28, 2025
 
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  intent  of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate  the  distinguished  histories  of  the  communities   which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate  the  200th  Anniversary  of  the  Town of Savannah in Wayne
County, New York, on February 28, 2025; and
 
  WHEREAS, The history of the land  where  the  Town  of  Savannah  is
located  is  rich  in historic artifacts, spanning well beyond 200 years
ago to centuries more of permanent and seasonal  communities  by  Native
American peoples, including the Cayuga and Owasco people; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  Town was formed from the City of Galen; from a rugged
landscape, the people of Savannah transformed the land into  flourishing
farmland  and have been historically known as top producers of potatoes,
onions, and sugar beets  for  some  time;  Savannah  farms  continue  to
provide  fresh,  high-quality produce to the local community and beyond;
and
 
  WHEREAS, Savannah is also known as a significant destination for its
trails  through  beautiful  wetlands,  abundant  wildlife,  and  diverse
recreation;  it  is  part of the Erie Canalway Trail, Montezuma Wetlands
Complex, and a globally significant Important Bird Area; and
 
  WHEREAS, With a community that actively values and is  committed  to
service  and  community  development,  whether  it is creating community
fields, ensuring the  Erie  Canalway  Trail  did  not  bypass  Savannah,
putting  on  festivals,  hosting  community  dinners,  serving  as first
responders, protecting  wildlife  and  domesticated  animals,  providing
places  of  worship and food to residents in need, Savannah is poised to
continue its growth and success for centuries to come; and
 
  WHEREAS, Savannah is home to local businesses,  both  old  and  new,
that  actively  serve  the community by providing jobs, needed goods and
services, as well as being generous in consistently giving to  community
needs and initiatives; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Savannah  is  fortunate  to  have both long-standing local
businesses that have served with excellence and adapted to the needs  of
the  community  over  the  decades,  as well as new and innovative small
businesses and home-based businesses that continue to enrich and  extend
the offerings available to Savannah residents; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Savannah  residents, business owners, local organizations,
and town officials and staff look forward to building  on  this  storied
and  important  history,  working together to build a thriving town into
the next century; and
 
  WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb  and  flow  of  decades  of
growth  and  change,  the  Town  of Savannah continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life  of  its  citizens,  ensuring  a  positive
business,  institutional,  and educational climate, as well as providing
all essential services; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of  Savannah,  recognizing
the  significance  of  the  role it continues to play in the life of the
community of the State of New York; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to the Town of Savannah, New York.
