MOURNING the death of United States Border Patrol
Agent Sean M. McDonough, devoted public servant,
military veteran, family man, and beloved member of
the North Country community
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to convey its
grateful appreciation and heartfelt regret in recognition of the loss of
a courageous and dedicated law enforcement officer who gave his life in
the faithful service of his country, his community, and his fellow
citizens; and
WHEREAS, It is with profound sadness that this Legislative Body
records the passing of United States Border Patrol Agent Sean M.
McDonough, age 48, of Depauville, New York, who passed away on Friday,
May 1, 2026, after suffering a fatal medical emergency while conducting
marine unit training on the St. Lawrence River near Alexandria Bay, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Agent McDonough died in the line of duty, training
alongside his fellow agents to safeguard the northern border of the
United States, exemplifying the readiness, sacrifice, and quiet heroism
that define the men and women of United States Customs and Border
Protection; and
WHEREAS, Sean M. McDonough answered the call to serve from a young
age, honorably wearing the uniform of the United States Army and later
the Army National Guard, where he served as a Military Police Officer,
laying the foundation for a lifetime of public service to his Nation;
and
WHEREAS, In 2007, Sean M. McDonough began his career with United
States Customs and Border Protection, faithfully serving the American
people through assignments in Nogales, Arizona, the Houlton Sector in
Maine, and most recently, at the Wellesley Island Station within the
Buffalo Sector, where he protected the communities of the North Country
with skill, professionalism, and unwavering commitment; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of nearly two decades of federal law
enforcement service, Agent McDonough earned the deep respect of his
colleagues, his supervisors, and the citizens he was sworn to protect,
demonstrating each day the highest traditions of duty, honor, and
integrity; and
WHEREAS, Beyond his distinguished career in uniform, Sean M.
McDonough was a proud and active member of the Ancient Order of
Hibernians, embracing its motto of Friendship, Unity, and Christian
Charity, and lending his time, faith, and fellowship to the values of
his Irish Catholic heritage and the charitable mission of that storied
fraternal organization; and
WHEREAS, Sean M. McDonough was, above all, a devoted husband to his
beloved wife, Samantha, and a loving father to his two cherished
daughters, Rory and Nora, to whom he gave the steady example of a man
guided by faith, family, and service; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Depauville, New York, Agent McDonough was a
familiar and respected presence throughout Jefferson County and the
greater North Country, where his kindness, humility, and willingness to
lend a hand earned him countless friends and a lasting place in the
heart of his community; and
WHEREAS, On Monday, May 11, 2026, a solemn law enforcement
procession and services were held in Clayton, New York, drawing
officers, agents, and community members from across the State and the
Nation to pay final tribute to one of their own, a fitting reflection of
the brotherhood and sisterhood of those who wear the badge; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Sean M. McDonough leaves behind a legacy that will long
endure in the memories of his loving family, his fellow agents, his
fraternal brothers, and the grateful citizens of the North Country and
the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of United States Border Patrol Agent Sean M. McDonough,
faithful public servant, military veteran, devoted family man, and
beloved son of the North Country, and to express its deepest condolences
to his family, his fellow agents, and all who knew and loved him; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of United States Border Patrol Agent Sean M.
McDonough.
