HONORING Ed Gosek upon the occasion of his
retirement after 36 years of distinguished service
to SUNY Oswego
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
those individuals whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to
enhance the stature of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Ed Gosek upon the occasion of his retirement after 36 years of
distinguished service to SUNY Oswego; and
WHEREAS, A former Laker himself, Ed Gosek played for SUNY Oswego
from 1979-1983, earning both his Bachelor of Science in 1983, and Master
of Science in Education in 2001, from the university; and
WHEREAS, Ed Gosek began his coaching career in the Oswego Minor
Hockey Association, where he led youth teams to four New York State
titles and his tireless dedication to grassroots development earned him
the NYSAHA Peter Rush Award in 2008, for contributions to youth hockey
and the prestigious USA Hockey Walter Yaciuk Award in 2009, for
outstanding service to the Coaching Education Program; and
WHEREAS, Ed Gosek's coaching career with the SUNY Oswego Lakers
began in 1990, when he was hired as the Men's Ice Hockey Assistant
Coach, a role he served for 13 years until 2003; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, Ed Gosek was named head coach of the Lakers and in
just his fourth season as head coach, he guided Oswego to its first-ever
NCAA team national championship, defeating Middlebury in overtime to
capture the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey National Title; he
was honored with the AHCA Ed Jeremiah National Coach of the Year Award;
and
WHEREAS, For the past 36 years, Ed Gosek rendered faithful,
conscientious, and valuable service to SUNY Oswego; and
WHEREAS, From 2009-2019, Ed Gosek's teams earned eight NCAA
Tournament appearances and made five consecutive Frozen Four trips, a
testament to the program's sustained excellence under his leadership and
in all, he has guided the Lakers to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, five
SUNYAC championships, and 14 SUNYAC title game berths; and
WHEREAS, Ed Gosek has been recognized as SUNYAC Coach of the Year
three times in 2005, 2010, and 2019; and
WHEREAS, With a career record of 427-149-38, a .726 winning
percentage, Ed Gosek stands as the all-time winningest coach in SUNY
Oswego men's ice hockey history; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as Assistant Coach and Head Coach of SUNY
Oswego's Men's Ice Hockey Team, Ed Gosek served with loyalty, honor and
distinction; and
WHEREAS, For more than 30 years, Ed Gosek has been a dedicated
contributor to USA Hockey, playing a key role at numerous national
select festivals in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Rochester, New York, and
Buffalo, New York and he has facilitated the New York State 14U
Development Camp on the Oswego campus for over 15 years, helping to
develop and mentor the next generation of elite players; and
WHEREAS, In his official acts, Ed Gosek was governed by a keen sense
of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his cherished children,
Jeremy and Sarah, who have felt privileged to be a part of his fruitful
life and rejoice in his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure with SUNY Oswego, Ed Gosek earned the
admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Ed Gosek upon the occasion of his retirement after 36 years of
distinguished service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Ed Gosek.
