OBSERVING July 25, 2025, as the 63rd Anniversary
of Sagamore Hill's designation as a National
Historic Site
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commemorate historic landmarks within the State of New York that
contribute to the cultural richness, educational advancement, and
tourism economy of the region; and
WHEREAS, Sagamore Hill, located in Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New
York, was the cherished home of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President
of the United States, from 1885 until his passing in 1919; and
WHEREAS, During Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, Sagamore Hill
became known nationally and internationally as the "Summer White House,"
where the President conducted official business, hosted dignitaries, and
shaped policies that helped define an era; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing its enduring historical significance, the
United States Congress authorized the establishment of Sagamore Hill as
a National Historic Site on July 25, 1962, preserving it as a monument
to Theodore Roosevelt's legacy and American history; and
WHEREAS, Since its designation, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site
has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the Nation
and around the world, serving as a major tourist destination on Long
Island and significantly contributing to the local economy; and
WHEREAS, The site offers guided tours, educational programming,
museum exhibits, and public events that help bring Roosevelt's life,
values, and contributions to reality for students, families, scholars,
and history enthusiasts alike; and
WHEREAS, Sagamore Hill also supports the preservation of the
surrounding natural landscape, reflecting President Roosevelt's profound
dedication to conservation and the environment-principles that remain
highly relevant today; and
WHEREAS, The 63rd Anniversary of its designation as a National
Historic Site presents an important opportunity to recognize not only
the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt but also the continued value Sagamore
Hill brings to New York State as a center of heritage tourism, civic
education, and historical preservation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
observe July 25, 2025, as the 63rd Anniversary of Sagamore Hill's
designation as a National Historic Site and to celebrate its lasting
contributions to public history, education, conservation, and tourism in
the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the National Park Service at Sagamore Hill National
Historic Site and to local and state historical and tourism
organizations.
