COMMEMORATING the 20th Anniversary of the Relay
for Life in the Town of Yorktown and recognizing the
40th year of Relay for Life's global impact in the
fight against cancer
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those organizations and events which improve the quality of life
for the citizens of New York State and bring communities together for
noble causes; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Relay for Life in the Town of
Yorktown and to recognize the 40th year of Relay for Life's global
impact in the fight against cancer; and
WHEREAS, Relay for Life began in 1985 when Dr. Gordon Klatt walked
for 24 hours to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, launching a
global movement that has since raised billions of dollars for cancer
research, prevention, education, and patient services; and
WHEREAS, Over the past four decades, Relay for Life has united
communities in over 30 countries and has become a beacon of hope for
millions affected by cancer; and
WHEREAS, In 2005, the Town of Yorktown joined this powerful movement
by hosting its first local Relay for Life, and over the past 20 years,
the Yorktown event has become a beloved community tradition marked by
remembrance, celebration, and action; and
WHEREAS, The Yorktown Relay for Life brings together survivors,
caregivers, families, students, civic organizations, and local leaders
who work tirelessly each year to raise funds and awareness in the fight
against cancer; and
WHEREAS, The continued success and growth of the Yorktown Relay for
Life is a testament to the strength, compassion, and resilience of the
Yorktown community and its commitment to making a difference; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
celebrate significant milestones in the histories of vital community
events that promote health, unity, and hope; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Relay for Life in the Town of
Yorktown and to honor the 40th year of Relay for Life's global impact in
the fight against cancer; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the organizing committee of the Yorktown Relay for Life.
