BY: M. of A. Bichotte Hermelyn

MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
May 27-31, 2025, as Postpartum Depression Awareness
Week in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
observances working to raise awareness about serious mental and physical
health issues that affect citizens of this great State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 27-31, 2025,
Postpartum Depression Awareness Week in the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious mental health
condition that affects approximately 1 in 7 women following childbirth,
with symptoms that can significantly impact the well-being of mothers,
infants, and families; and

WHEREAS, PD is often misunderstood or overlooked due to stigma, lack
of awareness, and inadequate access to mental health resources and
support; and

WHEREAS, Early identification, treatment, and community support are
critical in helping individuals recover from postpartum depression and
related mood disorders; and

WHEREAS, Increased public awareness and education about postpartum
depression can help break the silence, reduce stigma, and ensure that
all parents-whether welcoming their first child or expanding their
families-receive the care and compassion they need; and

WHEREAS, The observance of a week dedicated to this important matter
provides an opportunity for advocacy organizations, healthcare
providers, and families to raise awareness, share resources, and support
those affected by postpartum depression; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 27-31, 2025, as
Postpartum Depression Awareness Week in the State of New York; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
