        COMMEMORATING November 11, 2025, as Veterans Day
 
  WHEREAS,  Veterans  Day,  November 11th, is a day dedicated to honor
those who served in  the  United  States  military  for  their  service,
sacrifice, and contributions to our county; and
 
  WHEREAS,  November  11th  is an important date in history because in
1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,  an  armistice
was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then
known as "the Great War"; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Commemorated  in  many  countries  as  Armistice  Day  the
following year, November 11th became a federal  holiday  in  the  United
States  in  1938;  in  the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War,
Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day; and
 
  WHERAS In November 1919,  U.S.  President  Woodrow  Wilson  proclaimed
November  11th  as  the first commemoration of Armistice Day to remember
all lives lost in the war and the heroism of those who served; and
 
  WHEREAS, On November 11,  1921,  an  unidentified  American  soldier
killed in the war was buried at Arlington National Cemetery; on the same
day  the  previous  year,  unidentified  soldiers  were  laid to rest at
Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris; and
 
  WHEREAS, In May of 1938, November 11th  was  made  a  legal  holiday
through  an act of Congress, and was dedicated to the cause of peace and
honoring veterans who served in World War I; and
 
  WHEREAS, In December of 1941, the United States entered  into  World
War  II,  and  in  1950,  the  Korean  War; in 1954, after the return of
service personnel from both World War II and the Korean  War,  President
Eisenhower  signed  a  bill rededicating and renaming November 11th from
Armistice Day to Veterans Day; November 11th became a day for  Americans
to  honor  veterans  who served in all wars and commit themselves to the
cause of peace; and
 
  WHEREAS Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada  also  commemorate
the  veterans of World War I and II on or near November 11th; Canada has
Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday
of November); in Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it
is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11  a.m.  every  November
11th; and
 
  WHEREAS, In the United States, an official wreath-laying ceremony is
held  each  Veterans Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington
National Cemetery, while parades and  other  celebrations  are  held  in
states around the country; and
 
  WHEREAS,  New  York  residents have served in all military conflicts
and wars in which the United States was involved in  from  the  past  up
until  today;  this  includes  but not limited to the Revolutionary War,
 
Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam War,  and
the Global War on Terrorism; and
 
  WHEREAS, The State of New York wishes to honor the men and women who
have served in the United States military; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate November 11, 2025, as Veterans Day, and further we encourage
all New Yorkers to fly the American Flag on this day; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That copies of this  resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted  to the American Legion Department of New York; the Veterans
of Foreign Wars Department of New York; the Military Order of the Purple
Heart Department of New York; the Disabled American Veterans  Department
of New York; and the Vietnam Veterans of America New York State Council.
