MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
February 2-6, 2026, as School Counseling Week in the
State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of National School Counseling Week
WHEREAS, The American School Counselor Association has designated
February 2-6, 2026, as "National School Counseling Week" to celebrate
the contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems; and
WHEREAS, School counselors help develop and guide all students
throughout their academic learning, social and emotional development,
and career exploration; and
WHEREAS, School counselors assist students in managing serious
challenges of growing up, including peer pressure, bullying, mental
health issues, school violence, disciplinary problems, and more; and
WHEREAS, Our school counselors have been at the forefront in
advocating for an education system that provides equitable opportunities
for all students throughout New York; and
WHEREAS, Our schools and communities benefit from the expertise and
guidance of professional school counselors who sharpen academic, career
and social skills; and
WHEREAS, The national average ratio of students to school counselors
is 376 to 1, exceeding the 250 to 1 ratio recommended by the American
School Counselor Association and other organizations; and
WHEREAS, The current student-to-counselor ratio emphasizes just how
essential this position is to student development and the importance of
recognizing this line of work; and
WHEREAS, This year's theme, "School Counselors Amplify Student
Success," highlights the vital impact these individuals can have both
inside the classroom and in planning for a student's future; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim February 2-6, 2026, as
School Counseling Week in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of National School Counseling Week; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be engrossed and
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
