Provides that when the governor declares a weather related state of emergency in a city having a population of one million or more, all public and private elementary and secondary schools shall be closed and remain closed until such emergency is terminated.

AN ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to requiring elementary
and secondary schools to close in the event the governor declares a
state of emergency related to the weather in any city having a popu-
lation of one million or more
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The executive law is amended by adding a new section 27-a
2 to read as follows:
3 § 27-a. Weather related state of emergency. Whenever the governor, on
4 such governor's own initiative or pursuant to a request from the mayor
5 of a city having a population of one million or more, finds that a state
6 of emergency exists because of the imminent or existing weather condi-
7 tions in a city having a population of one million or more, such gover-
8 nor shall declare a weather related state of emergency by executive
9 order. Upon such a declaration all public and private elementary and
10 secondary schools in such city shall be closed and remain closed until
11 such state of emergency is terminated.
12 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
