        Introduced  by  Sen.  RHOADS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Education
 
        AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation  to  requiring  community
          service by certain students
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 819 to
     2  read as follows:
     3    § 819. Community service.  The commissioner, in cooperation  with  the
     4  board  of regents, is authorized and directed to establish and develop a
     5  requirement of community service for all secondary school students.  All
     6  secondary  school  students  shall complete a minimum of eight community
     7  service hours per academic year in grades nine through twelve.   Thirty-
     8  six hours of community service is necessary for a student to graduate.
     9    §  2.  This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding
    10  the date on which it shall have become a law.
